3D Virtual Tour of the Juniata Watershed
presented on the GeoWall by Chuck Anderson

We often take the landscape around us for granted. It is familiar and seemingly timeless. We live and work in the Juniata Watershed, but do we really know and appreciate the land?  For example, what controls the location and shape of our mountains? What influence do they have on our soil, precipitation patterns, land use and water flow? What impact has human activity had and how has it changed through time? Come join us for a look at these questions.

Visualization and Outreach Specialist Chuck Anderson for the Earth and Environmental Systems Institute at Penn State, will provide a unique glimpse into the Juniata both past and present using the GeoWall (a set up with a computer, data projectors, and polarizing glasses for the audience) in a unique and amazing 3D Virtual Tour of the Juniata Watershed! Appropriate for everyone, regardless of background or technological savvy!

In our virtual tour, we will travel back to the late 1800’s by viewing historic stereo photographs from the region, and explore the lasting impact late 19th century millponds have on our valleys using state-of-the-art imaging. We will also explore the fundamental ingredients of our region’s landscape by looking at how geology, topography, soil, precipitation and land use tell a story, all presented in stunning 3D!

Chuck, a native of Minnesota , has a MS in Geology from the UC Santa Barbara. While working on his graduate degree, Chuck developed a keen interest in communicating complex geoscience topics to the public that led to a career in geoscience outreach. Chuck lives in State College with his wife, Susie, a GIS specialist with the Center for Environmental Informatics at PSU. Outside of work they are avid outdoor people enjoying hiking, biking and canoeing.
